Last month I had the privilege of attending the Canada Photo Convention held here in Vancouver! Both days were jam packed with amazing speakers and I came away feeling so inspired for the upcoming wedding season! It was lovely to meet other photographers, many who were also from the Vancouver area. The convention was held at the beautiful Sheraton Wall Centre which was perfectly located within walking distance to many yummy restaurants and coffee shops (which was definitely a necessity for the long info packed days).
The list of amazing speakers went on and on but I was most looking forward to listening to Ben Sasso because his work is breathtaking and his emotion filled images are the feeling I aspire to create in my work. I absolutely loved his presentation on refining style and brand, something that he is so passionate about teaching and cultivating for others in the industry. I strive to create consistency in my work that allows my clients to trust me, because every great relationship is founded on trust. Benj Haisch‘s presentation was awesome as he attempted to peer into the photographer’s soul to figure out why we do what we do and how we do it. Similar to Ben, I love that he touched on the importance of trust between client and photographer, it’s mutually beneficial as it allows for authentic, natural images.
Cliff Mautner, who I seriously think is the king of wedding photography, spoke about the balance between business and photography and touched on the importance of the quality of the light, not the quantity. His photography and use of light creates moody photos that draw you into the raw beauty of the shot. I also love his approach to ignoring many of the common rules we wedding photographers often feel the need to follow.
Other memorable speakers included Matt of Matt and Katie Photographers who flew all the way from Australia to speak while his wife was at home recovering from being hit by a car. Matt spoke about finding your true calling and using photography for the greater good; their humanitarian work in Cambodia and Nepal was so moving there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. Hailey Bartholomew opened my eyes to the world of fusion (mixing photography and videography), she’s such a pro, I absolutely loved her videos! And finally Kristen Lewis who made us laugh with hilarious stories about the industry that we could all relate to.
It was truly an amazing experience to be surrounded by so many talented and passionate people – these will definitely be two days I won’t soon forget. If you’re considering attending a photography convention, I can’t recommend this one enough! You can check out the speakers for next year’s convention here and sign up for Canada Photo Convention 2015 here!
